My co-writer Nev Ang, wrote about the Singapore Blog Awards and he has shortlisted the best ones he felt out of each category (except for the local and overseas celebrity categories). I only got to scan through the list of nominees yesterday and I was surprised. Having received an average of 100+ nominees for each category and weeks to go through the shortlisting, this is what they came up with?

Sure, there may be some gems amongst the finalists but there is only one or two in every category. I do not speak for everyone but I think most will find a clear winner in each category if the award is given to the most deserving. The breakdown of the judging criteria is as such on omy.

‘Voting’ only takes up 30% of the scores. 70% of the points is for the judges at omy to decide. What does that mean to me? If the tastes of the judges on blogs can only bring one or two good blogs to each category, I seriously doubt they can crown a deserving winner.

In summary?

  1. Little competition as the finalists are not deserving.
  2. The public has little say in this contest as our votes only make up 30%.
  3. Omy has the power to unsettle the popular blogs with 70% of the marks in their pockets.

It’s either going to be a walkover for some of the categories or the judges with bad tastes will crown winners that will make us wonder in incredulity.

Doomed to fail? I await with great interest.

I think 70% go to the judges is a good idea. Else the whole award will end up like a popularity contest.

  2. hurray so its unpopularity contest! woo!!! i knew it from the start, and out of the 100+ nominees, theres alot of same people.

i’m just too damn lazy to blog about this. moreover i’ve still got tonnes of stuff to blog about.

its all rigged. i’m not the winner, cause i’ve flamed omy.sg few days back.

no point for me to ask people to vote. its just silly

  3. If its going to be a case of 100% by voting, or even 70%, wouldn’t the case be turned on its nose, and the same conclusion still be reached?

An un-deserving winner being crowned, simply because he or she has more friends, associates or email accounts?

  4. Hi, addressing the concerns:

The 70% judging is to avoid the Awards becoming a popularity contest. In any case, we have also added three popular choice awards to the top 3 most voted bloggers across categories to balance up.

In addition, the panel of professional judges – Mr Man Shu Sam, Ms Kuo Jian Hong and Mr Kelvin Tong are not affiliated to omy and the judging is independent of influence from our part.

    cheers,
    Alvin, omy

You can email me at marketing@omy.sg if you have other feedbacks.

Yongwei: Please stop going around and spreading negativity. We did not rig the awards, neither did we blacklist you or anything. If there’s any such instances, would you care to highlight them to my attention? Thank you.

    Hi Miss Terious,

Hope you had enjoyed looking through the 100+ registrations in each of the 7 categories in Singapore Blog Awards :)

Our editorial team has taken the shortlisting process very seriously, but we acknowledge that everyone has their idea of which is “the best”. So if you have your own set of top 10, please feel free to share it :)

My apologies to all for replying to all of your comments only now as I was away on a business trip and my fellow writers found it inappropriate for them to comment on my behalf.

I truly understand that it boils down to a matter of ‘taste’ and everyone has their own top ten but since it’s a judging panel, I thought that the number of people will somehow produce a list of ‘generally approved’ top ten. And if this list is of such nature, whether if it’s a 70-30 or 30-70 competition, it wouldn’t matter as much because everyone is worthy.

I acknowledge that the paragraph above is again based on my taste and knowledge that that there are better blogs out there but in fact, I keep ‘hearing’ netizens complain about the quality of the shortlisted ones. Even the ones who are in the top 10. Not once have I heard anything good about it.

I am glad that omy has added the popular choice awards and I extend my well wishes to the success of this award despite my dislike for the most of the finalists which of course is a personal taste.

    Define worthy. Define quality.

Interesting, netizens, how many are we talking here?
10? 100? 1000? Are they the voice of every internet breathing thing of the world? For all we know, the ‘netizens’ that you talked to have submitted their own blogs hoping to get noticed and have their one month of fame but were not successful in being shortlisted? Talking about Sour Grapes? Read here: http://www.thenewsocialite.com/2008/06/30/for-all-you-people-not-nominated-for-omys-blog-awards/
