Singapore Blog Awards 2008
Incidentally, today is the first post by the team at Social Media SG and today’s also the release of the long awaited finalist list for Singapore Blog Awards by Omy.sg. We shall let this be our first post for discussion here at Social Media Singapore. – The Substandard Singapore Blog Awards 2008?
About The Singapore Blog Awards
The advent of the Singapore Blog Awards will herald the celebration of the blogger – the Internet phenomenon that is given life through the words, the photographs, the illustrations and the penetrative introspections.
For the diehard bloggers who have given their all to entertain and educate, the inaugural omy Singapore Blog Awards seeks to give the kind of acclamation these New Age wordsmiths deserve.
About 7 weeks ago, they opened their first round of nomination by the public. Everyone was able to nominate any blog, including their own, for the various categories. The list of nomination grew almost instantly as everyone started promoting themselves on their blog for nomination. And of cos, Omy.sg being part of SPH did play a part at the promotions and marketing of this award. Everyone wishes to be crowned the SG Blog Award winner. This, perhaps, will be one and only “highlight” for the Singapore blogsphere. (Who else is as giantantic as SPH right?) Being finalist already is a great sign for the bloggers. It’s a recognition that they can be proud of.
Let’s take a look at the finalist for each category. Out of the 10 finalist, how many blogs have you previously read? How many blogs in that list actually have the right content and whole package that deserves to be shortlisted? A quick run through and click of those sites, we did our 60sec glance and derived the following list of winners…
Best Youth Blog: Samantha’s
We do not know what is the right mix of content in order to be rewarded this title. But with our 60sec glance, she got our attention.Best Photo Blog: Peekaboo and food recentrunes
Great photos by the two of them. While we went through the list, we were quite disappointed that some of the blogs got selected for this one. We’re very sure there are many other better blogs out there with much better photos than them. Perhaps they weren’t nominated. Most Insightful Blog – Simply Jean
This we seriously do not understand the purpose. As quoted from the category descriptions…
“This category is for serious blogs with interesting and revealing insights, analytical reports, dealing with various social issues.”
We seriously do not agree that some of the blogs in the list deserves to be there. But well, since we do not know who’s behind the panel of judges and we do not want to start another war, we shall not name them out. Most Entertaining Blog: Coolsmurf
He got our votes as we felt that his is more focus and has the entertainment element in it.Best Design Blog: Sparklette.net
She’ll probably win this one. Great design, great content and probably one of the few who genuinely blogs for passion. No ads!Best Blog Shop: Joss Sticks
This we are also puzzled why Joss Sticks is categorized under Best Blog Shop. But since its there, and it’s the best we thought, in terms of design and content, she gets our votes.Best Individual Blog: Good Morning Yesterday
This blog perhaps suits better in the Most Insightful Blog category. But since its here, than so be it.
So the above are our votes for the award.
Our two cents worth for this award… the standard for the finalist could have been better. Well, just look at some of the finalist in the lists. If you have time to run through the long lists of nominations, I’m sure you’ll be able to find much better blogs in there.
We wish all finalists best of luck for this award and may the REAL BEST Blogs and Bloggers win.

Thank you very much of highlighting my blog. Actually I would prefer to compete under Education or Nostalgia. But they don’t have such a category. I did consider Most Insightful. but then I myself have likened my blog to a kopitiam where Ah Lao’s get together and reminisc about the old days … how insightful can that be. So by default I chose individual category.
Thanks for the vote! I can’t speak for all, but there are quite a number of genuinely great blogs deserving of their place as a finalist, for eg. Chun See’s blog and ieatishootipost, just to name a couple.
As for myself, at this stage it is rather disheartening to fall so far behind in my votes, yet there isn’t anything I can do to help. I can only hope that my supporters would vote and the judges would be kind to me
Well actually, most of the contestants never reveal which are the 3 posts that were submitted as the competing entries. I think it will be more appropriate to judge by reading those 3 blog entries to come to a conclusion
